Brass Rod Stake Mount

A mounting pad is cast on the back of the plaque to accommodate a 3/8” threaded brass rod. Stake mounts (24 ” long) can be straight or angled 45° to position plaque at an angle. The maximum size plaque for this single stake mount is 12” x 8”. The rod is 24” in length.

Garden Stake Mount

Stake attaches to the back of the plaque with machine screws. Stake is painted black or to match plaque background color. Garden stake mounts can be straight or angled 30°.

Square Post Back Mount

Black enamel-coated steel square posts attach to the back of the plaque with machine screws.
3 /4” x 48” long (plaques up to 100 sq. in.)
1” x 60” long (plaques up to 100 - 250 sq. in.)
1- 1/2” x 80” long (plaques 250 - 450 sq. in.)
2” x 80” long (plaques over 450 sq. in.)
Also available at 30˚ angle.

An invisible frame is ideal if a plaque may be relocated in the future. Two angles are provided to mount to the wall with standard fasteners, such as toggle bolts, wood screws, or machine screws and expansion sleeves. The plaque attaches to the angles with machine screws. Invisible frames require the depth of the plaque to be a minimum of 1- 1⁄4”. Minimum plaque size for this mounting is 12” x 10” and anything above 24” x 36” is $230 additional to plaque price.

Optional Mounting Methods

Rosettes with Wood Screws (WS)

Use for mounting plaques to wood or plaster surfaces. Holes are drilled through the plaque and countersunk to accept a flat head wood screw. A larger sized wood screw, #14 or #16, may have the head drilled and tapped to accept a rosette to cover the screw head.

Rosettes, Machine Screws & Expansion Sleeves

Machine screws and expansion sleeves work well with brick, stone, or masonry walls. Holes are drilled through the face of the plaque for machine screws. Each metal expansion sleeve (lead anchor) has a threaded interior that accepts a machine screw. Rosettes are optional.

Stud Mount

This method is recommended for concealed mounting on brick or masonry walls. The plaque is drilled and tapped to accept a threaded stud.

Through-the-Face Mount

If requested, cast plaques can be provided with holes through the face for mechanical fasteners. Metal screws or wood screws provided.

Standard Mounting Methods

Rosettes & Toggle Bolts

Toggle bolts (threaded machine screws with spring-loaded butterflies) work well with hollow tile, cement block, or drywall surfaces. Holes are drilled through the face of the plaque for toggle bolts. Rosettes which cover the machine screws are optional.

AlumiColor

The AlumiColor technology embeds UV resistant dyes into the anodic layer of anodized aluminum and has applications limited only by the imagination. From interpretive and way-finding signage for museums, parks and recreation, historic locations, hospitals, schools, golf courses, amusement parks and hotels, to public art pieces, permanent barcodes and OEM equipment, AlumiColor is simply brilliant.

Metalphoto™ Portraits

Metalphoto ™ uses a photo-sensitive aluminum sheet, available in either natural aluminum or gold-tone aluminum. The sheet is exposed using a film negative made from a photograph using a UV light source. The image is produced as a permanent black image on the plate. Metalphoto™ is recommended when the only art available is extremely detailed or the image itself does not have a lot of contrast (old photos, for example). This method can be used in interior and exterior applications.

Metalphoto™ Portraits up to 8” x 10”

Etchings

The etching process reproduces artwork with fine detail, as well as halftone photographs through acid-etching into metal sheet. The most common method utilizes a halftone dot pattern made from a 50-line screen. Halftone portraits resemble newspaper photographs and have visible dot patterns. The etched, recessed dots are black infilled to contrast with the satin-finished metal background. The best photographs for halftone etched portraits have high contrast tones with bright white areas, dense black areas, and minimal grey tones. Photos that are monotone or have muted colors will produce poor halftone etchings. Halftone etchings are not available in aluminum. The other type of etched metal portrait reproduces a black and white line drawing. Because a halftone screen is not used with hand-drawn art, the artist’s fine lines are captured in great detail in the metal plate and can be etched deeper. Etched portraits are recommended for interior use. However, deep-etched line art may be used outdoors.

Etched Portraits up to 5" x 7"
Flat Relief Portraits

An economical alternative to a bas-relief, this method begins with a black & white rendering of the subject. Once approved, a photopolymer pattern is produced. A raised image, two-level metal casting is manufactured and applied to the cast plaque. Minimum size for best quality cast portraits is 6˝ from chin to crown. Flat relief portraits are suitable for exterior and interior applications.

ImageCast ™

Working from customer-supplied images, Our vendor's ImageCast™artists create layouts that are cast as well-defined dimensional images on bronze or aluminum plaques. Perfect for personal or team tributes, historical markers, or any sign that needs to tell a pictorial story, ImageCast™plaques can be produced in various shapes and sizes, and color can be added to suit your needs.

Bronze up to 10” high
Aluminum up to 10” high
Bas-Relief Portraits

A premium reproduction, our sculptors model a dimensional, low relief clay sculpture of the subject. Once the clay sculpture is approved, a sand mold is made and a cast metal version is produced. The cast bas-relief is hand-finished and mechanically attached to the plaque background. Minimum size for best quality cast portraits is 6” from chin to crown. While most commonly associated with portraits, bas-reliefs are also effective for depicting buildings, seals, historical vignettes and many logos. Bas-reliefs are suitable for interior or exterior applications.

Protective Coatings

*Bronze plaques have a protective coating applied.

Diamond Shield Protective Coating (exterior applications): Available exclusively from our vendor, this clear coat is factory-applied only.
With a higher gloss than clear protective lacquer, Diamond Shield ® provides maximum durability in harsh exterior environments where plaques are exposed to salt, pollution, and weather. There is a lifetime warranty on Diamond Shield® Protective Coating.

Clear Protective Lacquer: Providing a low-gloss appearance, this clear coating was developed by our vendor to inhibit oxidizing. Ideal when matching older plaques or when a lower-gloss look is desired. There is a one year warranty on Clear Coat.
Chrome Plated Bronze
Raised surfaces of the bronze plaque are polished. The background of the plaque remains in its “natural sandblast” state. The entire plaque is then electro-plated using a standard commercial copper/ nickel/chrome plating process. Painted color can be applied to the recessed areas.
Satin Aluminum
The natural metal color with subtle horizontal grain lines. Meets NAAMM finish designation AA-M33-C11-R10.

Random-Orbital (Bronze or Aluminum)
The natural metal color with multi-directional brushed lines, achieved with a randomorbital sander. Meets NAAMM finish designation M35- M4x-C10-O60. Ideal surface treatment for cast plaques mounted in a sidewalk subject to pedestrian traffic.

Polished Finish (Bronze Only)
Natural metal color buffed to a high luster, obtained by polishing with successively higher abrasives, then buffing with a fine buffing compound.

Granite Infill (Bronze Only)

The recessed areas of cast bronze plaques are in-filled with a pulverized granite and resin mixture. Matthews then provides a high quality polished finish on the entire piece.

To Determine Plaque Width

• Review the inscription and determine which lines of copy are to have primary, secondary, and subordinate emphasis by letter size. Using the standard letter sizes shown, determine the letter size for each line of copy. Minimum castable letter height is 1/4” all capitals or 3/8” caps and lower case.

• Count the number of letters and spaces in each line. Count capital letters and spaces as 1 and lower case letters as .75.

• Using one of the following charts which correspond to the letter style selected, use ten character count lengths to determine the copy length required for each line.

• To allow for plaque margins and borders, add 2 to 4 inches to the “longest line” width requirement.

To Determine Plaque Height

• Add capital heights of each line of copy and multiply by two.

• To allow for plaque margins and borders add 2 to 4 inches to the calculated sum.

Note: If any emblems or special decor are to be incorporated into the plaque design and you know the dimensions of the artwork and where it is to be located on the plaque, add the appropriate dimensions to the width and/or height of the plaque plus an additional 2 to 4 inches.
